Welcome to my blog! My name is Maggie Burke and I'm an Assistant Professor at CCRI in the Computer Studies department. I primarily teach computer programming, but I also teach computer literacy. Prior to working at CCRI I taught as an adjunct at both UMass Dartmouth and UMass Lowell, both on-campus and online. Prior to that I was a software engineer developing educational math software.
In addition to being a professor at CCRI, I am the Distance Learning Coordinator. This is an enormously challenging and interesting job. In this position I work with the entire college community, coordinating all departments in facilitating online courses.
This summer so far I have just finished teaching/leading two online courses: an online programming course and a course for CCRI faculty in distance pedagogy. I felt that I for the first time used online communications tools in a way that was authentic and successful -- in other words, in a way that was not overtly academic.
IRL :D I am a wife and mother. My husband is a student working toward a PhD in Mathematics Education. Prior to that he was also a software engineer developing educational mathematics software, the SimCalc MathWorlds software. My daughters are both in high school. One daughter will be a senior next year at an agricultural high school. The other attends a traditional regional high school.
In my limited spare time I like to run (I've run a couple of marathons), garden, and sew. I'm looking forward to this course and working with you all!
Would be interested in hearing more about the digital pedagogy stuff you teach... let's find a time to chat more his week.
